Wondering why you should join the National organization?

When you pay your SinC national dues, you're giving yourself the gift of knowing, now and in the future, that you'll be able to continue reading the mysteries you love. In the ever changing world of publishing, women authors need your support. By paying your SinC national dues, you're showing our authors that you care about the future of mysteries written by women. All it costs is 11 cents a day. (President of Sisters in Crime Kate Grilley)

I was asked to expand on a point I made at the Chap. prez meeting at LCC, relating to Prez Kate's words above. The "ever-changing world of publishing" is focussing more and more on the big sellers. These tend to be by men, or where they're by women they're page-turning suspense (MH Clark) or forensics (Cornwell). What gets lost are "softer" books where either character studies or humor predominate. Yes, cozies. Yes, mostly by women. Where women do write
"what the guys write," we don't get the same attention or respect. The whole thing turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Reviews focus on "what people are reading." People read what's reviewed because that's all they know is out there. Publishers push books by authors who already sell big, or new authors who write books like the ones that sell big. Reviewers review what publishers push. And soon there's nothing to read but Grisham and Clancy. National SinC, by pointing out the disparity in advances, publicity, reviews and respect, can help keep women in print. The chapters don't do this, National does. This is what you get for your National dues -- the opportunity to keep reading the writers you want to read. (Author, SJ Rozan)
